Indians boys pull out overtime win over Marquette

Falls overcomes poor free-throw shooting

Feb. 5, 2013

The rally was not pretty, but it was effective, as the Indians' Daniel Dahlke put in a tip-in with 15 seconds left in overtime to lead Falls to a 58-56 decision over Marquette on Friday.

The victory made up for a 24-point defeat at the hands of the Hilltoppers the first go-round as Falls worked around an indifferent 14-of-28 effort from the foul line.

"We really needed this," Indians coach Dan Leffel said. "We have been playing better. The loss we had to Tosa (East) on Jan. 29 was tough. A late turnover did us in, but we bounced back."

The split left the Indians at 4-6 in the Greater Metro and 6-12 overall.

Falls could have beaten Marquette without overtime, but only shot 50 percent from the foul line in the game.

"It was much more interesting than it needed to be," Leffel said. That allowed the Hilltoppers' point guard Alex McBride to send the game into overtime on a near halfcourt 3-pointer that banked off the glass and in.

In the overtime, the Indians eventually found themselves down by one with 18 seconds to go. They got up a quick shot and the eventually would get three shots at the basket before Dahlke put in his tip-in.

Marquette got two pretty good looks at the basket before Devon Nauer corralled the rebound and was fouled with 0.2 of a second left. He hit the first free throw and a lane violation gave the Hilltoppers a chance at a last-second heave that was not close.

Brandon Ramey led the way with 17 points while Juwan McCloud had 12, and Nauer and Jerry Murphy had 10 apiece. Leffel praised Dahlke for "the game of his life" and highlighted McCloud for two clutch fourth quarter hoops and Murphy for scoring all 10 of his points in the second quarter after the Indians fell into foul trouble.

"We're turning the corner, the guys are becoming more intense," Leffel said.

The Indians took on Hamilton on Tuesday and host West Allis Central at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
