Two Menomonee Falls residents died Saturday afternoon after attempting to rescue a young boy in a small lake near Wild Rose.

Tonya L. Lenz, 29, and Al A. Smith, 31, both entered Kusel Lake to help Smith's son, who had fallen from a raft. The Waushara County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call about 2 p.m. reporting a possible drowning.

Emergency personnel located Lenz after a short time, and later found Smith after searching the lake. Both were transported to Wild Rose Hospital where attempts to revive them were unsuccessful.

The boy was able to make it to shore before responders arrived, according to a statement.

Waushara County officials said the victims were visiting friends and relatives in the Wild Rose area.

The 80-acre lake located five miles east of Wild Rose is largely shallow, but drops off sharply to 29 feet deep.
