Great Accomplishments at St. Boniface

There are a lot of great things happening at St. Boniface. I have continually been impressed with the many accomplishments that the children here have experienced. The last few weeks have been no exception.

A couple of Sundays ago I was honored to be invited to the VFW awards banquet. When I arrived I was pleased to see our students Sarah, Philip, Kathleen and Kristopher. All of them had been awarded prizes for their essays entitled, “When Should We Honor Our Heroes?”. After some emotional opening ceremonies for the event Sarah, Philip, Kristopher and Kathleen got in front of the audience and read their essays. I must admit it was the first time I heard them, and I could not have been more impressed with their well thought out and touching reflections on the importance of honoring our nation’s heroes on a daily basis. They brought some of the individuals to tears with their heartfelt respect for the various heroes in our country. I sat back with such great pride that St. Boniface was represented so well at this awards banquet. In fact, they presented me with a special plaque for our school to hang up illustrating the fact that the last two essay contests have been won by St. Boniface students. This year Kathleen was the first place winner and last year Emily won first place. The members of the VFW were very complimentary and appreciative of our students and of our school for our efforts to recognize the important role of the soldiers and other heroes of our communities. In addition to these students being recognized, Ms. J was awarded with the VFW “Teacher of the Year” award for her great work in exposing the children to their communities and the importance of civic responsibilities. It is so important for us to educate the children on the important role that they play in their communities, and the VFW event provided them an opportunity to see this first hand. This was a great event and St. Boniface should be very proud.

Last Monday, Caleb and Isaac represented St. Boniface in the district spelling bee. After many tough words and some suspense it came down to two students. One of the students was Isaac. In order to win, the competitor needed to correctly spell two words. The final went back and forth and in the end Isaac rose victorious! I was so impressed by his ability to spell words correctly. I would not have been able to spell half the words correctly myself!

In addition to these events two of the 8th grade basketball teams have qualified for the Padre Serra tournament. The boys play their first game this Thursday, March 4 at 7:45 and the girls play on Thursday, March 11 at 6:30. All games are played at Mount Mary College. We had a spirited  pep rally yesterday to show our support for these teams as they begin tournament play.

These are just a few of the many accomplishments of the children that make up the student body of St. Boniface. I know that there are many more great things yet to come. Way to go everyone!
