Real ID...

Political, Quality of Life, U.S.

Governor Doyle is using the money that had been designated for Real ID for other purposes.  That is nothing new for our governor, of course, but it seems particularly inappropriate since Real ID was to create tamper-proof driver's licenses and identification cards that would be used to obtain passage onboard aircraft in the domestic U.S.

Now we have the new Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, openly admitting that she is doing everything possible to get this law repealed.  That seems, to me at least, to be more than a bit incongruent with her function of protecting us from terrorists in the homeland.

Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-WI, has issued a strong statement of his disappointment over this position on Napolitano's part since he fought to get Real ID passed and since Real ID was made important as the result of its being recommended by the 9/11 Commission to keep America safe.

It would seem that either the 9/11 Commission got this all wrong, or that Napolitano doesn't care if they got it right or wrong.

Governor Doyle is probably breathing a little easier since he won't have to invent a new tax or fee to come up with the Real ID money he has been spending elsewhere.

There is a very real diminution of security measures that is occurring under the new Obama Administration.

I am very concerned for our safety, and I suspect that you are, as well.  I cannot determine why it is that our new government doesn't share our concern.  It obviously doesn't since it is cutting the Defense budget, it is curtailing our ability to gather intelligence information, and it is not at all concerned with illegals having bogus identification within our borders.  It has even said that it would like to bring at least fifty inhabitants of Guantanamo stateside to be released to freedom amongst us citizens.

None of the Obama Administration's actions to date give me a sense of well-being so far as your safety and my safety here in our own country.  His selection of Janet Napolitano as the Homeland Security head certainly is among those things that bother me a lot.  She is just not up to that job in my opinion.
