Wisconsin Obesity Climbs Annually

Quality of Life, Healthcare, People Making A Difference, Taxes

According to the latest Gallup survey, Wisconsin’s 2013 obesity rate now stands at 29.0% of our total population.  Our state continues to rise in this percentage each year.  And, the worst state in the union for obesity at 35.4% of its population is Mississippi.  Montana has the lowest statewide obesity rate coming in at 19.6%.

There is nothing good about obesity other than maybe being more buoyant in water…and I’m not even sure about that.

If you think about it, when was the last time you were in a reasonably large gathering of people where there was not even one obese person within your field of vision?  Chances are good there were several.  And chances are also good that there were representatives from the group who were morbidly obese.

This is something most people can control and yet we don’t.  Is it too hard or do we simply think modern medicine will take care of all our ills?

Obesity is an epidemic in most of our country and certainly in Wisconsin with close to one in every three people being considered obese.  The cost of caring for the obese is rising faster, obviously, than the cost of caring for those who are not obese.  The Affordable Care Act (a/k/a ObamaCare) will be much less than affordable since many of the obese were likely to have been uninsurable or found in high risk insurance pools already.

Exercise even in small doses can help.  Eating balanced diets that do not consist of junk food can help.  Is it that we simply do not think we’ll be hit with a nasty illness or debilitating condition even if we are over-weight?  Or do we simply not care if we live or die?
